For our first exhibition of 2005 Art 3 have invited young curator Anjalie Dalal-Clayton .

Since establishing ourselves on the London Art scene, one of our intentions has been to provided occasional opportunities for new curators and organisers of exhibitions. 'In Motion' is the first of such collaborations

Anjalie has been studying the administration side of contemporary art over the past few years, as well as currently working on a masterŐs degree programme in Art History at The School of Oriental and African Studies in London.

"After meeting many artists, I chose Maggie Barclay and David Cottingham to take part in this group show.

The works in the exhibition are inspired by movement, dance and the figure, themes that I had previously been uninterested in, and had never been the basis of a show at The Wine Gallery. Yet I found Maggie and DavidŐs work to be both intriguing and appealing, and therefore decided to organise In Motion. It is a show that marks something new"

Maggie Barclay

" Movement and the figure are my major sources of inspiration. This series of drawings is based on sketches done at company rehearsal (Union Dance Company) and at capoeira classes and batizadas, (Ourico, Grupo Senzala). The sketches are very rapid, drawn with a pen. I take photos as well, and then later in the studio use both sketches and photos as source material for further drawings.

Dancers have quite an extreme range of movement and over the hours of rehearsal the energy dynamic is very particular between intense repetition and repose. Capoeira moves are all based around attack and defence. The game is a combat between two players and is played fast or slow to the rhythm of the music played and sung around them.

In my drawings I want to capture the intensity and energy of the dancers and capoeiristas, their body shapes, and above all the movement and fluidity".

David Cottingham

"My Drawings are in a range of media including Graphite, Chalk, Pen, Brush and Mixed Media. The Prints are Plate Litho limited editions.

The Line Drawings and Lithographic Prints are a linear distillation of the essence of the figure and my aim is to bring a sense of joy and sensuality to the graphic representation of the body.

Many of the figurative works contain elements of movement or gesture. Inspired by music, dance, photography and sculpture, the abstracted and complex figure paintings and drawings aim to celebrate the body and express movement of the human figure in its purist form".

As well as making figurative work, David also is an abstract painter, more of his work can be seen by clicking here

David had a major exhibition of his abstract work, with 2 other artists, at the Agora Gallery in Chelsea, New York City in November 2004
