Art 3 presents Bircan Kanat's exciting 'photo collages' for our latest exhibition, With elements of Surrealism present and, in particular, juxtapositions that draw reference to Man Ray, Images are loaded with intensity but not without humour

Bircan was born in Turkey in 1974. She has always been interested in practising art in all its many forms and experimented with photography from an early age and her varied travels have proved a further inspiration. Painting has also been a passion, although she chose to study sculpture as a student at Chelsea College of Art and Design.

The fascination with altering shapes and shifting reality through collage is also rooted in childhood when she began to cut her dresses into various shapes and when her puzzled mother asked why, she replied, "because it is prettier". Bircan describes her photo collages as photographic sculptures and uses only her own images to create. The results are deeply atmospheric and imaginative works that intrigue and challenge the viewer.

Bircan (together with her partner Steve Harper) set up The Blue Wing Gallery, originally in Kew in 2003, and more recently at Padstow in Cornwall, where they both moved to at the start of 2004.
