Art 3 presents landscape artist Ella Berthoud for our latest exhibition at the Wine Gallery. Ella is attracted to landscape as a subject partly from her experience of travelling around the world, she has lived in South Africa, Iran, Finland, Australia and Trinidad After studying English Literature at Cambridge University, Ella undertook a Fine Art Degree at the University of East London, graduating in 1995. Early influences were figurative artists Jean Cocteau and Toulouse Lautrec, Jock MacFadyen and Harland Miller

After college, Ellas originally worked in various studios in the East End of London, where she concentrated on city landscapes, and the various blindnesses of city life. This led to some 'whited out' pictures, and some that were 'painted blind'. Her literature background, via ideas from Italo Calvino, Jose Saramago, has seeped into her work at times

She is now veering back towards figurative paintings, in portraying "things that lurk in the wild woods of Hertfordshire" near to where she lives with her family, her work follows Impressionist ideals and has traces of Paul Nash and Pollock 'drip paintings'.

In support of her own practice, Ella has also been working as an Artist in Residence in two local schools over the past four years.
