'East in 2 West' puts together work of selected artists that are fellow practicioners in the London studios of ASC. Nothing particularly spectacular there, but I've always wanted to take a group of artists and encourage them respond directly to an earlier work they made. In general we usually do this in our practice anyway as it- and we as artists - develop our careers along, but i wanted to see if we can get a dialogue more specific then that going. what were we thinking when we made that work 5 years ago?, how did we feel about events in our life at that time?, even if our work has stylistically changed in time, are the issues and concepts still the same or not? and so on......
'East in 2 West' is also a chance for me to bring together two important parts of my life and my practice. ASC studios where I have my studio and work with the exhibition committee and Art 3. this is a continuation of the collaborative projects we have done in the past such as with The South African and with BNI And it is another step up as we sit on the verge of a breakthrough with the exciting projects and collaborations we are developing over the coming year. We're also part of the Arts Unwrapped extravaganza that is is demonstrating the beating heart of the London Art scene, it's artists at the source in their studios.
The nine of us artists in the opening 'East in 2 West' show @ Alma Enterprises will all produce at least one new work for the Wine Gallery show that will attempt to relate in this way, beyond that we don't yet ??, the second show is a response to the first one and the work exhibited will probablybe determined at the last minute. Although they will run almost simultaneously, the shows are linked together but competing for your attention. One represents the urban cool of the east end, the other contrasts this, by residing amongst the establishment of the Fulham Rd in the west. which camp do you belong in?, where are you more comfortable hanging out? Which do you identify more with as a person?
